So just earlier this week, Wednesday I finally had some work. Yes I was working, like actual work, job, making money working! Hell must've frozen over you say? I actually had this lined up before my Tahoe trip but still. Now it's not regular work, it's still on a per-show/as they need me/on call basis type of thing.
So recently I'm working with TheaterWorks in Palo Alto. Basically I'm an overhire electrician. So they need some people for lighting stuff, they sent out emails and be like "hey yo, can you work this?" and ideally you can and you do, and they pay me. Yay! Interesting the connection came from a friend at UCSC who works for them, and then in turn told me to contact another friend whom had graduated from UCSC (theater arts as well) who works on staff for them. So it was a nice string of connections.
Now what's funny about this whole thing is I was sooo stoked to go do work. Yeah this was a strike, and it was like almost 8 solid hours of taking lights and cables and pipe and weights and whatnot down and packing it up into trucks. Plenty of physical (skilled) labor, but I was delighted to be doing it. I think it was the major lapse from theater and just having been sitting around that made this return to it, regardless of the type of work, so welcome to me. The other fun thing is getting to walk thru the theater and find all the various passages in the space. This was at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. I had actually seen a deal of shows there done by Theater Works so I was familiar with the space, as an audience member. However now I got to walk around the backstage and see all the various areas. It's always fascinating how these buildings are designed and how you can go from under the stage to the balcony and never be seen by anyone in the audience.
So that's that, couldn't contain my excitement ya know? I've got some more work lined up with Theater Works and hopefully somme more will develop with other companies around the bay area.
