So hey all I've always had an interest in urban exploring and old bulidings and the story they can tell from what they used to house. Well it was a spur of the moment idea when I drove past this supermarket had the "ooh yeah that's right there used to be a [store name] there! Wow it's empty." I also immedatelly noticed a way to get inside. Thus I determined that I was goign to go urban explore it that night.
Now I managed to rope in my brother and my two friends Stephen and David. While only me and my brother actually explored the buliding interior (the cool part) Stephen and David actually provided a lookout. My brother took lots of photos, 120 to be exact. If you wanna jump straight to the photos, check em here. Read more for the full story behind the whole mission.
Now I'm sure you're wondering WHERE is this place. Well as Stephen asked before we left, "Isn't this tresspassing?" to which I replied "Yes. So it is illegal." That given those such details won't be published. Most urban exploring missions will tend to be labled as such. Moving along.
This supermarket closed, well I have no idea how long ago. I want to say I was in high school at the time. The most startling thing about a supermarket is how enormous they are when there is absolutely nothing inside of them. No shelves, no counters, no furniture (save a few bits), no refridgeration. Hell even the back storage area had several of it's walls torn out, you could see the little concrete footing where it would have started in the photos. As fairly harmless the whole thing was, it was still erie most of the time. Generall I think the prospect of being caught keeps it interesting. Speaking of which, me and my brother had just entered the buliding, and I was on my cell with Stephen out in the parking lot. Two police cars shot out from behind the building and took off. It was fairly scary, as my initial thought when he said "oh shit two cop cars!" was, "FUCK they can't be THAT fast." More than anything we have the question still lingering is what the hell were they doing behind the building. Sketchy. It was really interesting all the while. Half the fun was going thru areas and figuring out what each section once was.
Clearly they were wanting to recoup some losses so thus anything of great value (namely the HUGE refridgeration system) was torn out compleetly. Not only was the actual fridge units removed, the heat exchangers on the roof were gone (no small feat), AND we also concluded that the main compressor system was cleared out as well.
After some poking around in the back area of the store we headed up the access ladder to the roof. Fun, namely for the sake we were on the roof. Got some nice photos and such.
Heading back down into the store we then went back out into the main area of the store to check out various other doors that we noticed. We had made an effort to keep to the back area of the store as we were visible from the front doors, and given there's NOTHING in the main area you could be seen. On our way out we found a gem. The datacenter/safe room. There wasn't any actual network equipment in it, just the racks, patchbays, and cables. The safe was quite interesting. There's three doors on it. The top one I'd assume would store things for the store, keys and whatnot. The bottom one we believed is where the money would end up. This one had a time opening system on it. Now here's where it gets interesting– inside the bottom area there was a very clear channel that came from the upper area of the safe, kinda like a dropbox type thing. Well, on the back of the safe was another small door that clearly led into that section. So we're guessing that you'd open the one on the back and drop the money deposit into it. (Anyone who works with this sorta thing care to comment?)
The whole thing mission took about an hour and a half, something around that long. It wasn't a particularly huge building but still provided some intersting stuff to explore. Now that I have finally gotten into urban exploring expect more of these to come in the future. Lastly, a great moment of the evening. We had recently returned from the roof. I recieve a text from Stephen "Oh crap bears. Run run run." Immedate I ducked into a small room (the creepy cleaning one) and told my brother "Kyle get in here NOW!" in a harsh whisper. I then promptly called Stephen to find out, and of course I'm whispering on the phone and all. I ask "what's happening?!" To which he replies, "Oh. Nothing." Asshole. Well we all got a good laugh out of it, but at the instant of it happening it was quite scarry.
Oh yeah don't forget to check out the whole album of photos.
